Charlotte’s parade is on Saturday the 7th, and if you read that somewhere as the 8th, you read a listing rather than the organisers. The Collins Freedom Foundation Salute to Veterans Parade steps off at eleven in the morning on Saturday, November 7, 2026, on North Tryon at 9th Street, and marches south through Uptown to Brooklyn Village Avenue. That is on the foundation’s own parade page, along with registration that closes on 17 October. Veterans Day itself is Wednesday, November 11, four days later, and that is the day the restaurant offers run. The meals are the least settled part of any of it: every list you will find today is last year’s list. We checked.
The parade, and the date to trust
Step-off is 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 7. It starts on North Tryon at 9th Street and runs south through Uptown to South Tryon at Brooklyn Village Avenue. The Collins Freedom Foundation runs it, the organisation Colonel Quincy Collins founded, and it has been the opening event of Charlotte’s Veterans Day week for years.
It is a big one. In recent years more than two thousand participants have marched: high school bands, pipe, drum and bugle corps, JROTC units, scout troops, active military and first responder units, motorcycles and classic vehicles, K9 and equine therapy groups, veteran organisations and corporate veteran employee groups. Registration for 2026 is open and closes on 17 October, so the line-up is still growing.
Be careful with the date. Several Charlotte event listings currently give Sunday, November 8. The foundation’s own parade page says Saturday, November 7, and that is the one to go with. A festival follows in Uptown at Romare Bearden Park once the march ends; the organisers have not posted the 2026 times for it yet, so treat the timing there as unconfirmed.
And keep the two days apart in your head. The parade is the 7th. The free meals are on the 11th.
Free meals: what is actually confirmed for 2026
Same problem, different subject. Search for Veterans Day free meals right now and you will find long lists with 2026 in the headline. Open the restaurants’ own pages and the offers are from 2025. Applebee’s Veterans Day page, as this was written in mid-September, still says the free entree is available on Tuesday, November 11, which was last year’s date.
So we are not going to publish a list of offers that no restaurant has agreed to. What we can tell you is the pattern, because it is remarkably stable. The chains that run a free Veterans Day meal have run it for years, most announce in the last week of October, and the terms rarely move: dine-in only, one meal per veteran, a limited menu to choose from, drinks and tip not included, and participating locations only, which matters if you are coming in from Concord, Matthews or Fort Mill. Applebee’s has run its offer for eighteen consecutive years. Golden Corral, Texas Roadhouse, Chili’s, Denny’s, Red Robin, Cracker Barrel, Bob Evans and Buffalo Wild Wings have all been regular participants.
We are checking the chains’ own pages weekly and will list each 2026 offer here as the restaurant confirms it, with the date we confirmed it. Nothing goes on this page from an aggregator.
What counts as proof of service
This is the question that actually causes trouble at the door, and the answer is broader than most people expect. Applebee’s published terms accept a Uniformed Services ID card, a Uniformed Services retired ID card, a current Leave and Earnings Statement, a veterans organization card such as American Legion or VFW, a DD214, a citation or commendation, and, simply, a photograph of yourself in uniform. Most chains use a similar list. If you served and you do not carry a card, a DD214 or a photo is usually enough. Call the specific location first, because the offer is franchise-level and the person answering the phone is the one who will be working the door.
Gifts for the veteran in your family
The veteran in your house is reading the top half of this page. If you are the one buying for him or her, this is the half that matters. These are the things that actually get worn and kept: the branch cap, the case for the flag that came off the casket, the box the medals finally come out of the drawer for. Twelve picks, all five branches, every one of them rated by people who bought it.

Where to eat after the parade
An eleven o’clock Saturday start puts you off Tryon Street around half past twelve, which is the easiest lunch slot of the week to fill. These four are ranked by Insider Score and all of them open at eleven on a Saturday or earlier. Two of the higher scores on our Charlotte lists are not here because of geography rather than quality: Kabab-Je in Matthews scores 7.9 and The Smoke Pit in Concord scores 7.7, and both are a long way from Uptown.
Yunta Nikkei
Insider Score8.1
Peruvian and Japanese · 2201 S Blvd
South End on South Boulevard, a couple of miles down from the finish. Japanese-Peruvian, and on a Saturday it opens at eleven, which is unusual for it. The rest of the week it is a dinner.
Catalina Kitchen And Bar
Insider Score7.8
American · 1942 E 7th St
East 7th in Elizabeth, straight out of Uptown and away from the closures. Open from eleven on a Saturday, and the sort of room that can seat a table of eight without a fuss.
Calle Sol Latin Café & Cevicheria
Insider Score7.4
Latin American · 1205 Thomas Ave
On Thomas Avenue in Belmont, open from eleven every day of the week. Ceviche and a pisco sour is a better answer to a cold morning on Tryon than it sounds.
Supperland
Insider Score7.2
Southern · 1212 The Plaza
Plaza Midwood, in a converted church, and open from ten on a Saturday. Closed Mondays and dinner only midweek, so the parade Saturday is the right day to use it.
