Charlotte has six state parks within 50 miles, and three of them point in three directions and two states. Crowders Mountain, west past Gastonia, has two peaks, sheer cliffs and a trail that crosses into South Carolina. Andrew Jackson, south near Lancaster, South Carolina, keeps the boyhood home country of the seventh president. Lake Norman, north near Troutman, covers 17 miles of shoreline on the largest man-made lake in North Carolina. This is the outdoor half of the day. The eating half is at the end: one table on the way back from each park.
We run State Park Near Me, a directory of every state park in the country, and we are a guest here. Top of Charlotte asked for the parks. They supplied the restaurants.
The day, in order
The two North Carolina parks are free for day use, so the only cost is the South Carolina side: $3 for adults at Andrew Jackson. Watch the closing time. In October, Crowders Mountain and Lake Norman stay open until 8 p.m., but from November 1 all three close at 6 p.m., and Crowders locks its gates at the posted hour with no exit for anyone left inside. Andrew Jackson’s museum is open weekend afternoons, Saturday and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m., so go on a weekend if you want to see it.
Crowders Mountain

Two peaks rise out of the Piedmont here, with towering cliffs and hard trails; the Ridgeline Trail runs on into South Carolina to Kings Mountain National Military Park and Kings Mountain State Park. The park gallery includes the Charlotte skyline seen from a Crowders overlook. Birders come for everything from songbirds to birds of prey. Day use is free. In October the park is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and from November through February 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; the gates lock at closing, so be back at the car in time. The visitor center is open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Andrew Jackson

This is the homeplace country of the seventh president, and the park’s manager says the one thing a first-time visitor should not miss is Anna Hyatt Huntington’s statue of young Jackson, Boy of the Waxhaws. A museum covers Jackson’s boyhood in the backcountry and holds Revolutionary War artifacts; it is open Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. An 18th-century replica schoolhouse opens weekend afternoons through November. There is an 18-acre lake for boating and fishing and two one-mile loop trails. Admission is $3 for adults, $1.50 for South Carolina seniors and $1 for ages 6 to 15. The park is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. through October 31, then 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Lake Norman

The park covers about 17 miles of the northern shore of Lake Norman, the largest man-made lake in North Carolina, and Park Lake, dammed off from the big lake, is the quiet place to fish and paddle. Mountain bikers come for the Itusi Trail, nearly 31 miles of single-track. Day use is free; only boat rentals and swim passes cost extra, and the park’s own page says boat rentals are closed until late spring. Day-use hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in October and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. from November through February. From November 1 the visitor center opens Friday through Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Where to eat after
The parks sit in three directions, so here is one table on the way back from each, from three Top of Charlotte lists: date night, Indian and local favorites. The scores are theirs, not ours.
Yunta Nikkei
Insider Score8.1
Peruvian and Japanese · South End
After Crowders Mountain, in South End as you come back into the city. Peruvian and Japanese plates built for sharing; the Nikkei ceviche and anticuchos skewers are the orders, and reviewers single out the service by name.
Curry Gate 2
Insider Score8.1
Indian and Nepali · South Boulevard
After Andrew Jackson, on South Boulevard as you come back up into Charlotte. An Indian and Nepali kitchen; the vegetable momos are the reason regulars return.
The Cellar at Duckworth's
Insider Score7.7
Gastropub · Uptown
After Lake Norman, at the end of the I-77 drive into Uptown. A small, dimly lit room; the lamb chops are the standout, with truffle mac and beer-braised short ribs behind them.
